Alice’s Tea Cup

Meet my new favorite place in the world: Alice’s Tea Cup.  It’s tea + yummy treats + lunch + relaxing + friends + smiles + alice in wonderland.  Basically it will make your day.  You won’t want to leave.  You will just sit back and chat with your friends feeling like you’re on a cloud floating in paradise while sipping some black tea (there’s a whole book of teas to choose from!).

Ok the main part, the teas. I love tea, you probably know this already.  We settled on:
Monk’s blend – a blend of Darjeeling and Keemun black teas.
Mount Everest Breakfast – a blend of Assam and Yunnan black teas.  Smooth and subtle.
They both were so delicious. If you go their website and click “Tea List” you’ll see everything to choose from!

Another big bonus is the cups and plates, everything is mismatched and very “Alice”.  It’s my dream to have a whole cupboard filled in this way!

Then there’s the yummy food.  I got a bowl of turkey Chili, but I also heard the Vegetable soup was good.  Our friends had the ham and cheese sandwich and that looked delicious too! Here’s my soup, it was surprisingly really hearty and filled me up.

And let’s not forget some of the best.. the treats! I got a chocolate cupcake which was *get ready for this statement*  I think the best cupcake I ever had in New York.  Maybe anywhere.  I’m not joking.  It was moist chocolate cake with chocolate frosting that was light but yet had a thin crust on top to bite through.  To top it off rainbow sprinkles.  It can’t get any better.

Friends had some scones, chocolate and pumpkin. I didn’t try the chocolate but the pumpkin was soooooo good.

There is artwork and cute text all over the tea room.. it’s really a happy place.  We were there during the day where it was mostly women lunching (we had the only 2 men at our table for a while!), but I would guess on the weekends there’s lots of little girls running around with princess dresses and fairy wings.  If you are in NYC, please visit this place.. and ask me to go with you. :)

I love this place! Happy times!

Window Farm/Seeds Update

Just a week ago we planted our seeds and almost everything has already started to come up.

photo 3.JPG

We are worried that some of them seem a bit leggy and we want them to be big and strong, so we set up a fan nearby to get them ready for the outside winds.

photo 4.JPG

Also we transplanted the lettuce into the window farm that will grow hydroponically.

Berlin Food

This post was meant to happen about a month ago, but I got sidetracked with the holidays.. but I didn’t forget.  Since food is often posted here and I generally love food, I wanted to share some food we had in Berlin.  Because isn’t that what traveling is about? Just eating and eating and eating…

Giant white chocolate covered pretzels – YES PLEASE.

Ok, not expected, let me explain. Berlin actually has a great burrito place called Dolores and if we visit again, we will go again, super YUM.  Also the morning upon leaving we needed quick breakfast so we went for safety, Burger King, which we met the manager who is born/raised in Brooklyn just a few blocks from where we live.  He was a highlight of the trip, a much needed “home” feeling of outgoingness and war stories.  Also, OMG,  their version of pancakes here are little round shaped cakes with OMG, SYRUP BAKED INSIDE OF THEM. NO LIE. SO GOOD.  BURGER KING PLEASE READ THIS AND SEND ME SOME.

Also, I’m going to show you hotel food because this was pretty amazing. We stayed at the Soho House and basically I wish we could just move in.

Also, Air France is boss with meals – so much food.  On NYC-Paris I had Beef Shepherd’s Pie with Salmon.  On Paris-NYC I had lamb. And the chocolate pudding = YES

Oreo JELL-O Pudding

I’ve been a JELL-Oaholic the last few days between the black cherry JELL-O and the cups of pudding, it’s been a great few days.  When I was in the grocery store a few days ago stocking up I came across this gem that said it was Oreo cookie flavored. WHAT? My hands started shaking, I started to salivate onto the aisle floor, my eyes began to close.. and then I was asked to leave.  But then I came back later and bought some.  I have to be honest, I don’t really taste the Oreo cookie at all, it really just tastes like the traditional chocolate/vanilla mix to me, but there’s something more darker about it, more rich, more creamy.  Definitely would buy again.

Winter Time Running

I don’t run, I don’t think I ever voluntarily ran.  In middle school I walked our mile run.  It’s just never seemed “fun” to me, but this morning I woke up with this idea of “You should run today! That sounds exciting!”. And you know what, I actually thought it was.   Does this mean I’m officially a adult when I think to myself a afternoon of fun means running a few miles when it might be the coldest day of the winter (22 degrees F, feels like 10)? Or does it just mean I’m crazy? Maybe both.  But I threw on whatever clothes I deemed run suitable, downloaded a app that would let me run/walk in intervals, and off I trotted to the Greenway on Kent Avenue in Brooklyn.  There are multiple greenways set up in New York that allow you to ride your bicycle, run, skate with the safety of being set up so no cars are allowed on it, or really near it (there’s literally a bumper so cars won’t drive directly next to you).   This is great for those that are always a little fearful of getting hit while riding their bike or running on the streets, and I hope they set up more of these.  Anyways though, as today was super cold, the greenway was fairly deserted minus a few other random runners and bicyclists.

Turns out this was alot of fun and something I’d like to add to my schedule, maybe 3 times a week?  I did a few searches online for the best intervals for beginner runners and it seemed to work with me today.   Here’s what I did:

Walked from home to the Greenway in a pre-warm up
Ran/Walk in intervals of 2 minutes run, 3 minutes walk x 6 times on the Greenway
Once finished, I walked the entire way back home for a cool down.

This led to 6 miles and quite a great workout that had me feeling proud afterwards.  That’s the thing about working out for me, it’s such a chore most of the time and something I’m dreading but the feeling of completing it is  one of the best feelings in the world.   Here’s my map that I plotted out after I returned.  “S” is where I started, “F” is where I finished the run.  And then I walked all the way back to “S”.

map

Run on the greenway today.

Here’s my blazing red running pants. I need some better running shoes.

IMG_4662

I’m about to die here, but basking in the glory of completing the final interval.

IMG_4657

Also if you are looking for a great app that helps you with intervals – I think this is one of the finest, it’s called “Interval Run”.  It’s $1.99, but lets you customize your workout, so I set it up for how many sets I wanted to do and how long I wanted to run and walk for.  The best thing is that it allows you to still jam out to your music, but this is just played on top.  So one minute you’re listening to Cut Copy and then the voice enters in and says “Begin running in 3, 2, 1” or “Stop running in 3,2,1”.

The Artist

We just saw “The Artist” this afternoon at BAM (btw,  beautiful theaters). One of the  best films I’ve seen in a while, really witty and will make you laugh. Bonus points for animal lovers. :)   Please see it! :)

Jane Priser’s Cat Creations

I randomly came across Jane Priser’s Flickr page through a random Google search for what term, I forget, probably “pastel cats” (its a favorite search I do!).   There I found this and fell in love.  So after a few clicks, I was able to find that she had a Etsy shop, but the cat wasn’t listed! I quick sent her a message and just a little while later she agreed without any hesitation to make one just like it. I SWOONED.  And when it arrived a few days ago, I SWOONED AGAIN.

This sculpture is completely hand sculpted with clay, with bright blue eyes, it looks like a cat from space ready to steal your heart. It’s one of my favorite items ever from Etsy (and that’s saying alot, I’m a Etsy addict).

Now it’s featured by the door so everyone can say hello and goodbye to it.

Spring 2012 Garden Planning – IT HAS STARTED

photo 1.JPG

The seeds have arrived…

photo 2.JPG

The stores have the potting mix in… calling out our name so bad we bought 1 bag…

photo 3.JPG

So last night we took to getting the early seeds planted.  Originally they were going to start the seeds January 20, but we moved them up a week as we thought the extra week would be better (and we couldn’t control ourselves).  So what did we start?

photo 1.JPG

Onions! I don’t eat onions at all, but Matthew planted 9 cells worth of onions, I thought he was crazy.

photo 5.JPG

And broccoli! We planted 18 cells of broccoli.. so hopefully 18 lovely plants!

photo 4.JPG

A little water to help the guys..

photo 4.JPG

We also cleaned out our Window Farm to start new plants about a week ago.  We’re doing 2 lettuce, 2 basil, 2 oregano and 2 cilantro… As you can see some have already come up.

Special thanks to the best helper, Xanadu Pluto.

“WHAT! NO CATNIP?” We will Xany.. we will.

Tooth: 48 hours

“Are my lips covered in blood?” is a common question I asked Matthew for the past 2 days. Especially when we taught yesterday and I was positive the students were looking at me because I looked like a boxer who just got jabbed in the mouth.  Thankfully though it was usually answered “no” although once he said “you look like a vampire”. Not sure if that is good or bad though?  For the past 2 days this has been my diet:

photo 1.JPG

photo.JPG

I know that probably looks delightful but I’m struggling and I need something salty! All of a sudden I want everything to eat.  Someone mentioned sub oil to me and I pictured a Italian hoagie.  Someone mentioned mushroooms to me and I pictured them decorated on a margarita pizza dancing into my mouth.  Tonight I’m going to start eating heated things, like soup broth and mashed potatoes. Very excited!

Not a whole lot of pain, but it might be the pain killers that are assisting.  The only bad thing is the stitches that constantly jab the side of my  mouth and I mistake for something being caught in my mouth. :(

Sad Tooth

Today I got my back tooth pulled – not my wisdom – that was years ago, this was just the regular back tooth that didn’t do well the past few years.  I’m sitting here with a mouth full of blood, biting down on gauze and waiting for my prescription of pain killers to be filled.  To be honest, it didn’t really hurt, it was just a little weird to be able to hear and feel the tooth coming out – what hurt more was the shots to numb me.  Doctor says I will be swollen and in pain for the next 48 hours, and I have to live on a ice cream/pudding/jello diet until Thursday or Friday, so I stocked up.

I won’t post the gnarly bloody tooth photo here (I saved that for facebook) but if you must see……

sad-tooth

The tooth that was removed is the top left one, not sure if you can tell but there was basically a hole in it. Weirdly it didn’t hurt at all.

Thesis Day

Matthew has been feeling the stress lately about his upcoming final semester and the cloud of “What’s my thesis”?”.  After many 5AM talks about this, I decided to wake up today and make this Thesis Day! A day to think, smile and get down to business.

So I made this card in the morning…

photo 1.JPGphoto 2.JPG

Then I presented it to him.  He was nervous, teeth chattering.

photo 5.JPG

And I walked him over to the other side of the loft and here it was, thesis central.

Surprised Matthew when he woke up today with this. #thesis

It was equipped with giant sharpies because that just makes anyone happy.

photo 3.JPGphoto 4.JPG

There was also a Xanadu Pluto waiting too.

photo 1.JPG

Then he got down to business and stared at the wall.

photo 2.JPG

Brother stopped by to show his support.

photo 3.JPG

Then after hours of talking it through, it all started coming together.

photo 5.JPG

There it is folks!

photo.JPG

It will be amazing my love! <3 <3 (ps, I think Xanadu has paper in her mouth).
